Why would a '90 VW Passat with a manual transmission be stuck in 1st gear?

My friend owns a '90 VW Passat and as she came to a stop sign today and went to change from 1st into 2nd gear, it would not change from 1st.She says that the stick feels like its loose and feels seperated from the gears. She can't even get it to go into reverse. I think its a trany problem and I want to know what went wrong so that I can help her.|||in that car i believe that there is a cable shifter. This is likely the problem, as the above post'er has stated. I would check to make sure the linkage is tight, and in good working condition. The other thing i would add is that the shifter assembly is known to get worn out over time. There is a ball attache to the shift rod, as well as a few bushings that wear out over time. You can get a rebuild kit if you look around on the web.

The only other thing that it may be but is not likely, is that the clutch is worn out or the cable needs adjusting. When you press the clutch in and try to change gears and the clutch dosent dissengage, then you cant change gears. but if she was at a stop sign, and wasnt moving with the clutch in it was likely the linkage/cables/shifter. one or more of them.|||The way you describe it, it sounds like the shift linkage could be broken. Can she move the gear selector but it just doesn't do anything?
