What is the biggest engine I can fit into my '58 VW Type 1 without destroying the body?

I have a '58 VW Ragtop that I would like to turn into a fast little number, not really a dragster or anything crazy, but just something that would give a newer sports car a run for their money I don't want to have to cut the body or anything like that because it just seems like a shame.|||best way is to build up a 1600 into something larger. a properly tuned 1915cc will run laps around a new tuner.

i wouldnt go for an engine swap when you can build a fast reliable air cooled for a lot less money and get the same or more power from it.|||Have you thought about a engine from a Porsche? It's not a direct bolt in but there is no cutting.|||In general you can stuff a standard 1600 + engine that has been modified for around 2000 and that will do the job.

BUT..

In my own experience a 1770 or so is about as big as you want to make it - especially for the older bugs which had less rugged suspension system and will already be a bit tired.

Also, once you get over the 1700 limit, you start generating a LOT more heat which, if you do not dissipate it will cause some premature engine wear. That means adding on an oil cooler of some kind which, in turn, will likely lower the value of your 58 classic body.

I drive a 71 with a 1770+/- engine and a stock carb system. I also has a street cam in it which hits its power on the top end of the curve. When it hits the high end it just starts to pull away and I can cruise the freeway at an easy 70... (which is just fine for a VW with its somewhat lousy air flow).

90% of a VW is the way it looks.. speed is not something it is ever going to handle, so max your dollars out on the visual and you will be glad you did.
