What is my VW bug doing with the gallon of gas that dissappears every night from it's tank?

My VW has a midnight fuel consumption problem. It will lose about 1 gallon of fuel each night. There is not leak that I can find in the fuel hose, no puddles of gas under the car. I've checked all over the tank but can't find a hole. Is it possible it's evaporating that quickly? And if so, where from?|||If this is the old-style Bug, then it's leaking into the chassis. The fuel lines rin through the chassis, with a rubber grommet at each end to keep moisture out. When the rubber gets old, moisture got in and the fuel lines (made of mild steel) rusted through, and the chassis rails fill up, until they eventually leak out at the lowest opening, usually where the fuel line exits the chassis - which is next to the engine. This is why so many of the old Beetles used to catch fire.

The easiest fix is to disconnect the fuel lines at each end, and replace it with one that doesn't go inside the chassis - and don't forget to drain out the fuel that's already in there!

Good luck!|||Your VW is going out on you and getting "gassed"

Oh nuts "The devil made me do it -- really"|||Somebody is probally stealing it.|||Sounds more like a problem with the fuel indicating system. Some vehicles use a module to prevent erronious readings from starts, stops, inclines, etc. It may be that yours has become defective.|||thieves are siphoning it outta your car, with gas prices so high there will be a lot of this, u might want to get a gas cap that locks, unless you have a newer vehicle that has the block on it that you cant siphon(spelling) gas out|||buy alocking gascap, tell no one, it comes with a key. put it on away from home, or where ever you park it. maybe not the car is at fault, but a thief maybe taking your gas. can buy at most auto shops, 15.00 to 26.00 dollars. hope this helps, asnd i hope i am wrong about athief. you did say no leaks, no smell, no puddles. a gallon a night? only other thing that i think could make any sense, would be float valve in gas tank. is it original componant? could be time for replacement.|||First question i have after reading your question: how do you know its loosing "about 1 gallon of fuel each night" if you do not smell anything and there is no puddle?

Second if the car is no leaking it, and its not running. the fuel can't do anything but sit there.
