How can I check to see if the engine in a VW Golf was replaced, or if the stock engine is still in?

So I'm looking at buying a 2001 VW Golf 1.8 T. The car's got 165k miles on it but the dealer claims he changed out the motor himself, and put one in with only 80k. Is there some sort of way I can check if he's lying, maybe match the VIN# with the engine number?|||The engine will be stamped with an Engine No. This should correspond to the Engine number on the VIN tally plate which should give both the Chassis and Engine number. This in turn should correspond with the papers for the car. One cannot just change an engine without getting the cars papers changed to reflect this.

Another thing, the engine is not the only mechanical part of a car. The suspension of a car that has been driven on dirt roads will be giving trouble far sooner than the engine. So mileage on an engine is not the only criteria, it is mileage of the total system, which includes brakes, suspension, etc. that will indicate whether it is a good buy or not.|||he must have some kinda paperwork ,either from donor car with vin # ,or ask for car-fax for car your buying, personally if there is no any paperwork i would back up from that car|||check the vin number on the log book with the 1 on the engine|||The engine should have a VIN# stamped on it somewhere
