Whats the difference between a long block vw engine and a short block?

I was wondering because I am looking for an air-cooled Vw engine for my 1961 bug.|||A long block will have heads, the short block won't have heads or pistons and cylinders. Some builders will install the flywheel on a long block as well. It's tricky, requires special tools, and if you get it wrong, the crank gets ruined. Those tools are not expensive though.

If you fit a 1600 into that 61, the motor bay is slightly narrower, but it is a very common thing to fit into an early beetle.|||A long block includes the heads a short block is just the block part of the engine.
