Looking for a convertible under or around 10K which VW would you suggest?

Looking to buy a VW convertible (new beetle or cabrio) this summer. It will not be my primary car, just something fun to drive on the weekends. Any current older model VW owners that could give me advice on what year to avoid or which model to look for?|||I own a 92, 93, and 89 Cabriolet.

From what I have seen on the various cabby forums that I visit it's a crap shoot.

If the vehicle was maintained by the previous owners then most are a good buy.

If you are not ready to shell out green, for new to you but never maintained repairs, then any is a good

thing.

I would however stay away from Automatics, as the Cabrio (95-2005) has a weaker than normal tranny, this same automatic would also be in the beetles.

The 80-93 Rabbit Convertible/Cabriolet if maintained would be a good buy, and a fun drive, the 90-93 are more forgiving as far as normal maintenance goes, and the 010 automatic transmission is almost bullet proof and easier to rebuild.

I would look for a car that is maintained well, has the receipts to prove it, and has a current emission inspection/ timing belt replaced, and a new clutch as those are the high item tickets.

If the Top is worn, or in the case of a (electric) top that it hesitates going up or down, is usually indicative of the care that the previous owner shows in general to the car.

Good sites to visit to look at the buyers guide are:

www.cabby-info.com

I have my 92, and 93 are both automatics, and are daily drivers with 160K, and 140K on the clock.

Getting them to that status takes time, parts and monies. If you can't do your own maintenance, then the "older" one may not be your cup of tea.
