What is the difference between a 1600 and a 2200cc motor for a vw?

I wanted to know if a 1600 can be built into a 2200cc using the original 1600cc or if i need a new engine case. Dont really know much about vw motors. Thanks for the help|||try www.genvw.com here you will find your answer.they make stock to high performance vw type 1 engines including turbo charged.for you to get 2200 cc out of a stock 1600 will have to bore the case to 94 mm and clearence the inside of the case to fit a 82 mm stroke crank, cheaper to buy an aftermarket race case for 700.00 already clearenced for up to 86mm stroke and 94 mm pistons, and behind #3 cylinder filled in or you can check out www.cbperformance.com also have engine and parts for the type 1.|||Im assuming you mean the old air cooled VW engines?

You can easily change the cylinders (jugs) and increase the displacement, but at some point, you need to machine the cylinder block to get up to 2200cc.

It can be done but you have to find the right person to do it. There are a ton of VW websites that have that information. try starting with thesamba.com - lots of good info there.|||if you plan on making a 1600 into a 2200 make sure you have a dual relief case. if not you will blow the heads right off the engine. its very possible to do it and people do it all the time. the biggest i remember seeing was a 2440cc. first check your case for cracks and wear before you build it. the only difference is the pistons, cylinders and heads. you will probably want a counterweight crank, bigger valves, etc.|||A 2200 is a stroked 1600 with bigger pistons and jugs.

As long as you have a good case, it can be machined to hold the larger jugs (barrels) and your heads will also need to be cut to fit. The crank changed the stroke, increasing available volume in the cylinders giving you more cc's.

When you go that large, be prepared to spend some money! It is not cheap at all.

You will also need to beef up the transaxle to handle the new power
