How bad are VW buses with pollution and gas?

I've wanted a VW bus (type2) all my life, but I've been told they are gas guzzlers and emit a lot of pollution. I find this strange, being that they were famous for being "hippie" vehicles, but I suppose that was becuase you can pack so many people in. I currently drive a 94' Taurus, so how is a VW bus is comparison?|||Don't lose any sleep over the 'pollution' old VW bugs and buses put out. They are outnumbered 10,000,000 to 1 by modern cars with catalytic converters and fuel injection today, so just keep it maintained and enjoy it.

A herd of cows put out more pollution than a bus anyway.

They weren't just for Hippies, by the way, and the stereotype has worn pretty thin.

Both of my old buses ('66 and '79) can hit and maintain 65mph easily, but I generally drive them at 55-62 for economy and long life.|||They are EXCELLENT in fuel economy. Because their max speed is around 45. but that is with you matress, bongs, "product", hookah, enough patchouli insence to last a centrury, surf board, and girlfirend heres a link

mpg seems to run from about 18 up to about 25. Not great, but still as good as many things on the market today.

It lacks emissions equipment, but that is preferable if you keep up with science journals. It turns out that cats and other emissions systems are merely changing the things released by the car-its no better and is possibly worse.|||well at this point in you ford taurus' life surely it is just as worn out as the Vw bus you might have your eye on. But theres no doubt about it the bus will be simpler and by far cheaper to maintain at its worts than the Tarus ever was even at it's best. As smog and fuel mileage on the vW um do they even have to be smog tested anymore these days ? I could be wrong but I'm not sure they do, even if they do there are so few things that can go wrong that would cause it to fail, compared to the Tarus, and as always it depends on the vehicles mechanical condition, and the way you drive , for the mileage, and yes it should by all means get much better fuel mileage than the Tarus, specially if the Tarus is a 6 cylinder. Besides that theres no need too ever consider it nesesary to burn the expensive grade fuel in the Vw, hell a can of lighter fluid will burn in the VW just the same as super unleaded.|||I forget what year they changed but look for one with out reduction gears. With the beetle style upright motor. They lst longer an are cheaper to in crease cc size on. If you increase cc dont go to large. 1776cc would give more power an still get about 22 to 25 m.p.g. with a higher top end speed. Add a spin on oil filter an external oil cooler, adjust valves change oil an if you get it rebuilt you got a very good long lasting motor. If it has a 2 piece wind shield it has reduction gears.
