Any ideas how to fix the windshield wiper delay in a VW Beetle?

When I'm using the windshield wipers on the delay I notice the timer is never the same. Some times while on the longest delay the wipers do not stop. They keep going and never stop unless I turn them off. While on the delay switch they act as if they are on the low switch w/no delay. They have been doing this for a long time. Any ideas why or how to correct it?|||It probably has a bad, or incorrect relay that controls them. I would price one at your auto parts store, and compare the numbers on that relay, with the one in the car. If not the relay, I would suspect the multifunctional switch.
