I found an awesome looking 1968 vw fastback. The body is in excellent condition, the interior needs some work. But the engine looks horrible and rusted. The lady that owns it parked it in one spot 8 yrs ago, so I'm assuming that it no longer runs and that we would also have to replace the gas tank. They're asking 1,500 for it. Is this a good deal? I'm willing to do some work, but not have to spend a ridiculous amount of money. Thanks!!|||Older VW's are among the least expensive cars to work on.Stay away from the ones with an automatic transmission. They were not reliable. The standard trans. cars were very reliable.Get under the car and look for rust holes. To remove the engine all you need to do is basically jack the car up, disconnect a couple of wires, remove the throttle cable, then put a hydraulic jack under the motor, remove 4 bolts and lower the motor. In my younger days I had no trouble loading the engine into the back of a truck myself.|||Kira
$1500 is a good deal if the car is straight and doesn't need much body work. If the car has sat for 8 years, you will need to drain all of the gas and oil. You probably won't need a new engine, but the engine should be pulled out and cleaned up. The carburetor will need to be rebuilt or replaced along with plugs, wires, points and condenser. If for some reason the engine did need to be rebuilt, you are looking around $900 to $1000 and $300 to $500 in labor. I don't think this will be the case.
Best of luck.
Sound like a great project|||if stored outside then 1500 is too much .. depending on its condition anywhere from 500 - 800.. if stored inside and in fair condition id say 1200.. but i cant really give a exact number without seeing it.
as far as an engine for it.. you can get a builder to build you a turnkey engine for about 2000. just bolt it in and go. but look about on thesamba.com classifieds and you might be able to get a good deal...
also look in type 3 section of the classifieds and you might be able to find a fastback in better condition.
